TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs stood pat Wednesday, deciding that the cost to make a move on trade deadline day was too much. "We would have been hurting ourselves long-term and we werent prepared to do that," Dave Nonis, Torontos senior vice-president and general manager, told reporters. Nonis, who said he made plenty of calls to test the waters, said the asking prices were high and the talent on offer limited. The sense he got was there might be more movement come the summer. "There wasnt a lot available in general," he said. "I think deals that changed the look of your team seemed to happen at the draft." Nonis acknowledged that his team had been up and down, putting the onus on the Leafs to return to their winning ways before the Olympic break. "If we do, we should be fine. And if we dont, then were going to have some difficulties," he said. "But its not a bad team. I think weve got a good core group. Were very young still." Nonis said he did get trade inquiries, pointing to younger players like rookie defenceman Morgan Rielly -- who turns 20 on Sunday. "Morgan Riellys easy to move today. But it doesnt makes sense to us." He said the team could have got some "pretty good high picks" for some of its players facing unrestricted free agency this summer. One of those is forward Dave Bolland, who is recovering from a tendon injury. There is no time frame on his return, with Nonis saying some movement was still causing him discomfort. "Its going to take however long it takes. Im hopeful and confident that hell be back this year," said Nonis. Bolland had surgery after being checked into the board by Zack Kassian in a 4-0 loss in Vancouver on Nov. 2. Asked about taking on other teams unrestricted free agents via trade, Nonis said either the price was too high or he felt the Leafs already had comparable players. "Why pay a price for nothing? Asked how close the Leafs were to being a Stanley Cup contender, Nonis said the salary cap has changed the NHL landscape so that anyone who gets into the post-season has a chance to win it all. "Are there favourites? No question, Would I put ourselves in as a favourite? No. But I think you saw in the last year we were pretty close to moving on." Toronto, which took Boston to seven games in the first round of last seasons playoffs, was 32-23-8 going into Wednesday nights game in New York against the Rangers. Other Leafs who are eligible to become unrestricted free agents after the season are forwards Nikolai Kulemin, Jay McClement, Mason Raymond and Troy Bodie, and defenceman Paul Ranger. Old Skool Pas Cher Chine . Pospisil, whose season-ending goal is to improve his ATP Tour ranking enough to qualify for one of the 32 seedings at Januarys Australian Open, dominated Karlovic in 59 minutes. The world No. 40 never faced a break point and limited the big mans threatening ace count to a mere eight, while striking five key aces of his own. Old Skool France . The Blue Jackets play Thursday night at New Jersey in their first game after the NHLs Olympic hiatus. A native of Trencin, Slovakia, Gaborik has represented his country at the 2006 and 2010 Olympics but was unable to play in Sochi because of his injury. http://www.pascheroldskool.fr/ .Y. -- Kristen Gillman rallied to win the U. Vans Old Skool Pas Cher En Ligne .com) - Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mat Latos had an arthroscopic procedure performed on his right elbow last week, the teams official site reported Wednesday. Old Skool Acheter . - Jayden Hart scored once and set up two more as the Prince Albert Raiders downed the host Red Deer Rebels 5-3 on Tuesday to clinch the final Western Hockey League playoff berth.ASSOCIATED PRESS - The Toronto Raptors have yet to decide how they will replace injured leading scorer DeMar DeRozan in their lineup. His absence may not make too much of a difference in his first game out since they are facing the woeful Los Angeles Lakers. The Raptors have won three times in 17 road games in this series but figure to be favored Sunday night as they try to hand the Western Conferences worst team a fifth straight defeat. DeRozan, averaging 19.4 points, left in the third quarter of Fridays 106-102 home loss to Dallas. One day later, the team learned that he will be out an indefinite period with a torn tendon in his left groin. Coach Dwane Casey did not say how he will adjust his lineup, and the Raptors (13-3) know they need others to help fill the void left by DeRozan. The thing about our team is that we have guys that can step up and theyre definitely going to have to, forward Amir Johnson said. Johnson and DeRozan are both natives of the Los Angeles area who no doubt would be relishing this trip home to showcase why Toronto (13-3) is the Easts best team. Only one will be on the court. I feel sorry for the young man cause hes a helluva basketball player, Lakers coach Byron Scott said. I know hes an L.A. kid as well. Casey may have to give more playing time to reserve forward James Johnson, averaging 6.3 points and 18.3 minutes. James is going to have a tough task because hes learning the 3 and the 4 offensively so hes in a tough position in a sense because noow were going to need that extra body at the 3 with DeMar out, Casey said.dddddddddddd Scott doesnt see the Raptors as being too weakened. DeRozan is one of five players averaging at least 10 points for a club scoring an East-leading 107.6 points. Theyre still very athletic, very young, Scott said. They get after you pretty good. Terrence Ross is a good player, so itll probably put a little bit more on his plate and the same thing with Kyle Lowry and those guys. The coach was angry after Fridays 120-119 home defeat to Minnesota. Los Angeles (3-13) yielded 39 third-quarter points, and is allowing league worsts of 29.8 points in that period and 111.4 overall. Its really been our third quarters thats been killing us, Scott said. So obviously were not coming out of the locker room ready to play to start the third quarter and we gotta change that. The offense continues to revolve around Kobe Bryant, who easily leads the league by averaging 23.1 shots for the NBAs highest scoring average - 26.4. Bryants memorable career-best, 81-point performance came on a Sunday night at home against Toronto in a 122-104 win Jan. 22, 2006. He made 28 of 46 shots that night but is a far less efficient player now in the twilight of his career. Bryant is shooting a career-worst 38.8 percent. Ironically, one of the few other players in the top 50 in scoring below 40 percent is DeRozan (39.4). The Lakers superstars 27.6 scoring average against the Raptors is his best against any East foe.
